John C. Maxwell-Leadership Retreat 2013

John C. Maxwell is the master of teaching leadership. He is an author of over 70 books and has sold 22 million copies! He is considered the guru of leadership!

Law of the Lid: Your ability to lead will determine on your success. Your business will never grow past your lid. For example if you are on a scale of 1-10 a 6 as a leader your business will never grow past a 5 in business. As you grow as a leader, your team will grow.

Rule of 5: If you were to swing an ax just 5 times per day at a huge tree eventually what would happen? The tree would fall right? Find your tree! What's your purpose? What are your goals? What do you want to knock down?

EVERY DAY DO 5: What about on Sunday? EVERY DAY! What about when I'm on vacation? EVERY DAY! EVERY DAY MEANS EVERY DAY! Do a little bit everyday instead of doing a lot some day!

1)  Lead yourself: If you don't follow yourself then why would anyone else. Lead by example.

  • Have the leadership qualities about you that you will impart to others.
  • People must be able to visually see these qualities. People do what they see, it's not what you say, it's what they see in you! We attract who we are not who we want. Have your act together, quit pointing, quit talking, and start DOING! We teach what we know, we produce what we are! 85% of everything you know you learned visually.
  • Don't go back and tell the team what you learned. SHOW them!

2)  Everyday add value to people! Leaders focus on others first!?

  • You must really love people. You must value people.?
  • You must know what and relate to what it is that they value.?
  • Listen, Learn, Lead?
  • You must keep learning and growing. When leaders stop valuing people, then they should stop leading people.

3)  Everyday study leadership!

  • Take 1 hour a day to study leadership for the next 5 years you will then be an expert!

4)  Practice Leadership:

  • You must do something 10,000 times to master it.
  • Practice gives confidence.

5) Intentionally grow!

  • Surround yourself with those who are ahead of you, others that are better, or faster than you.
  • Find place where you are continually challenged, not looking for the hammock, looking for the hill. A place where you are out of your comfort zone, you want to be in over your head, wake up excited! Leave footprints not butt prints! A place where failure isn't your enemy. A place where others are winning, where people desire change, where growth is modeled, where it is expected.

Sometimes you WIN and sometimes you LEARN!
